چکیده

Mapping of substrate cover types such as Coral Reefs, Algae, Seagrass, etc. in coastal regions has been performed in wide areas using satellite-based observation since mid 1980's. Although the high spatial resolution data such as IKONOS images has overcome some spatial limitations, still low signal-to-noise ratio due to destructive atmospheric effects and intervening water column has led to a problematic image processing task. In this study, two pan-sharpened IKONOS data sets of Eastern part of Kish Island, located in the south of Iran in the Persian Gulf, acquired on 5 November 2001 and 23 June 2004, have been tested. Following registration using a 1:1000 scale topographic map of the region produced by Kish Free Organization in 2003, atmospheric impacts have been removed applying pseudo invariant features (PIFs). Two distinct methods, namely, Bierwirth and Lyzenga (Depth Invariant Indices (DII)) have been utilized for elimination of water column effects. Efficiency of these methods has been evaluated, comparing between the accuracy of generated thematic maps. Prior to classification, the bottom reflectance images (Bierwith based outcomes) were divided into two zones according to DOP index within red band. The other processing stages were identical during the procedure. Results of this research have shown that the use of Bierwirth model performed well against Lyzenga method in both data sets. In other words, Kappa index of Bierwirth was 0.67, 0.74 rather than the 0.64, 0.71 of the Lyzenga, respectively. However, these contrasts were more remarkable within live coral classes, when analyzing their user's and producer's accuracy. However both methods were almost poor in deep areas regarding the assignment of 10-12 m depth range to deep water category. This trend was more pronounced in the case of Lyzenga method. The use of hyper spectral data sets may lead to a better performance of the Lyzenga method.

Benthic Habitat Mapping Using Multispectral High-Resolution Imagery: Evaluation of Shallow Water Atmospheric Correction Techniques

Remote multispectral data can provide valuable information for monitoring coastal water ecosystems. Specifically, high-resolution satellite-based imaging systems, as WorldView-2 (WV-2), can generate information at spatial scales needed to implement conservation actions for protected littoral zones. However, coastal water-leaving radiance arriving at the space-based sensor is often small as comp...

Submerged and Emergent Land Cover and Bathymetric Mapping of Estuarine Habitats Using WorldView-2 and LiDAR Imagery

Tidal creeks are small estuarine watersheds characterized by low freshwater input, marine to brackish salinity, and subtidal, intertidal, and supratidal habitats. Most people are familiar with large rivers and estuaries, but the smaller tidal watersheds comprise a greater percentage of the coastline. As the population along coasts rises there is growing concern about water quality and increased...

Mapping Spatial Variability of Soil Salinity Using Remote Sensing Data and Geostatistical Analysis: A Case of Shadegan, Khuzestan

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Soil salinity is one of the most important desertification parameters in many parts of the world. Thus, preparing soil salinity maps in macro scales is necessary. Water and soil salinity as one of the contributing parameters in desertification, cause soil and vegetation degradation. Soil salinization represents many negative effects on the earth systems such ...

A Method to Analyze the Potential of Optical Remote Sensing for Benthic Habitat Mapping

Quantifying the number and type of benthic classes that are able to be spectrally identified in shallow water remote sensing is important in understanding its potential for habitat mapping. Factors that impact the effectiveness of shallow water habitat mapping include water column turbidity, depth, sensor and environmental noise, spectral resolution of the sensor and spectral variability of the...

Enhancing the detection and classification of coral reefand associated benthic habitats:A hyperspectral remote sensing approach

[1] Coral reefs and associated benthic habitats are heterogeneous in nature. A remote sensor designed to discriminate these environments requires a high number of narrow, properly placed bands which are not currently available in existing satellite sensors. Optical hyperspectral sensors mounted on aerial platforms seem to be appropriate for overcoming the lack of both high spectral and spatial ...
